Tips for Marriage

This is the first in a 4 part series on marriage issues. In particular the top 4 marriage issues of 2008.  Just so that you know what those are here you go:

These same four are in the top ten marriage issues every year so it seems that they aren’t going away any time soon. The first one in this series is going to be on money aka finances.  Poor handling of finances can destroy a marriage, this is a marriage issue you cannot ignore.

Financial advice is always available, but some couples choose to ignore it. The top 4:

* To have or not to have a joint bank account- Having access to your own money that you can spend however you want helps avoid arguments. Then some think there’s lack of trust issues if you do it this way. Take care of this marriage issue asap.

* Discuss finances on a regular basis- It helps if debt, bills and other finance issues are known by both so that each one knows what the financial situation is and that your goals are mutual. Seek advice asap if neither one of you can work it out.

* Living debt free- Make a plan to pay off existing debt. You have to help each other since the debt now affects each of your credit rating. Buy within your means if you have to go into debt to buy it, then don’t buy, this is the best way to stay clear of debt.

* Not keeping financial secrets- Be honest about large financial purchases and don’t do it without the permission of your parner, keep in mind that it will affect them as much as it will you, therefore, they need to be a part of the decision.

Most people know that financial disagreements are an issue in marriage and that it can lead to separation or even divorce. However, if you both put these top 4 principles in place then you can avoid at least 90% of financial disagreements. It can be a marriage issue that becomes a conflict, but only if you let it.
