Marriage Issues Part3- In-Laws
Now, it’s time for marriage issues number 3, the In-laws. In-laws can cause major problems in your marriage or they can be a huge blessing. Congratulations to all of you who have problem free In-laws. However, most of the time In-laws are a problem and can actually destroy a marriage.
If you have had issues with the In-laws while you were in the dating stage you most likely will continue to do so. Therefore, think long and hard before you marry into this family. You see, if you plan to stay married forever, they will be there forever also. A lot of people either forget this or think it will get better after marriage.
I hate to be the carrier of bad news, but it doesn’t get better unless a concentrated effort is made to do so. One of the first things you need to do is show them respect no matter how you feel about them. If your spouse disrespects them that’s on them, but you shouldn’t do it. Stay out of disagreements, let your spouse handle all of those because the next thing you know you will be the one the whole family comes against.
Do not allow In-laws to get involved in marital problems. Your partner needs to agree to any type of discussion concerning private matters. This way you can resolve marriage issues as a couple without interference from outside sources which will help strengthen the marriage and keep nosy In-laws from creating problems.
As you know In-laws are famous for causing tiffs. Don’t take the bait by arguing with them this is what they want. You need to find an excuse to get away quick! For example, your spouses’ mother comes over and finds the house in disarray and makes a negative comment. Don’t say anything negative back, but make up something and get away. Later on tell your spouse and have them handle it.
The best thing you can do for yourself and your marriage if you know you have busy body In-laws is to try and have the least amount of contact possible. Limit visits and conversations to a minimum and keep them brief.
Whatever you do don’t criticize your In-laws to your spouse or to their face. This will really create a huge marriage issue if your spouse is close to their family. As stated previously, if your spouse disrespects them or criticizes them that’s on them, but to avoid future problems you need to refrain from doing this.
The main thing to remember is that the spouse is priority not family. Once you get married the family is no longer in the same position in your life as they were. At times family members resent this and try to regain their position which creates problems.
